Hazel Ungwanaka’s paintings radiate pure joy, bursting with vibrant movement and color. Your gaze will glide over the intricate dot patterns that illustrate the sky and land surrounding her beautiful flowers.

Hazel Ungwanaka was born at Finke in the Northern Territory, and as a young girl moved to Maryvale Station where she was employed doing domestic work and tending the livestock.

She is an active artist at Tapatjatjaka art centre and one of the traditional owners of the country surrounding Titjikala.

For many years Hazel has carved punu. Her intricate work includes representations of animals. music sticks, birds and hunting implements carved from mulga wood.

In 2002 Hazel began painting. Her unique use of colour and design narrates important stories from the landscape of her country as well as images representing plants and wild flowers.

In addition to local flora, Hazel’s subject matter also includes animals such as lizards, birds and snakes, ancient Dreaming stories all reflecting a unique representation of her connection to her country around Titjikala.
