Title: Bush flowers

Lena loves to paint the flowers native to the central desert region. Maru Kuru is the red flower ground cover that grows around Alice Springs and translates as “Kangaroo Eyes”. It is a favourite subject of Lena and other artists at Tapatjatjaka Art Centre in Titjikala.

Lena Campbell was born in Alice Springs and grew up in Titjikala, where she is now a successful and vibrant “second generation” artist. Her Mother is a Pitjanjatjara  / Yangundjara woman from Mt. Dare near Finke. Her father was from Titjikala and her Grandfather a Pitjantjatjarra man. Lena’s Tjukurrpa is Eagle Dreaming.

Lena takes her inspiration from the country around Titjikala, and her distinctive motifs utilise intricate patterns symbolising native bush foods and local flora. Her subject matter includes bush fruits, witchetty grubs and wild flowers (mai wiru). Lena’s flowing designs and earthy colour use reflects the natural environment of Titjikala and her close relationship with the land.

Lena has two grown children and grandchildren. She is an active and dynamic member of Titjikala Community and currently Chairperson of Tapatjatjaka Art & Craft.
